Los Yanquis are a six-piece country blues band, playing a variety rockin’ roadhouse country boogie and tex-mex, with the odd heart-rending ballad, tales of lovers, drifters and heart-worn losers. Classic songs by the likes of Hank Williams, Gram Parsons, Merle Haggard, Steve Earle, BR549, Lyle Lovett, George Jones, Texas Tornados, Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry and more. Known for their high-tempo live performances, it is rarely long into a gig before the audience gets up and starts shakin’ it to the boys in the band.
Los Yanquis currently comprise (alphabetically):
Marc first came to prominence on the Bristol scene in the 80’s with teenage R&B outfit The Untouchables. He can also be seen augmenting local bands like The Bones and Ponchartrain, as well as performing his own material with his band The Highliners. He and Andy Pinner also occasionally appear as Dos Yanquis, an acoustic version of the main band..
Another co-founder, Stuart is regarded as one of the better blues harpists in Bristol, while his animated vocal style gives the band its focal point. Now living in rural Herefordshire, but still continuing to re-roof much of Bristol in his day-job as a roofer/builder. For reference, he is the one with the battered brown cowboy hat.
((Console Steel G uitar)
Known around Bristol and beyond as lead singer with his band Ponchartrain, Paul adds his wonderfully evocative steel guitar sound to the Yanqs. Paul has toured extensively both home and abroad with the Cardiff based Rockabilly band The Rimshots and has also recorded and toured with the legendary Belfast cowboy, Van Morrison. In addition he has backed numerous Rockabilly, Country and Blues legends over the years. He has a few stories to tell there....
(Vocals, Acoustic Guitar)
The third co-founder. Left-handed guitarist and for reference, the one in the battered black cowboy hat. Andy is still employed at what is now the University of West of England, where the band first formed over thirty years ago. Described recently as the “glue” in the band (by Stuart). So sniffing him is not to be advised.
James combines drumming with his grown-up job as English master at a local High school. He can also be spotted playing with local band The Shrinks, and occasionally with Marc in The Highliners. He has also toured with the American country star Kevin Montgomery. At smaller venues, James can often create a whole drum kit sound, with just brushes and a snare drum. He and Andy are fellow Essex men, so you can insert your own jokes here.
Recent raw recruit to Los Yanquis, although in fact Keith, doyen of Bristol's backlines for many a year, was the original bassist with Los Yanquis forerunner band "The Good Ol' Buggers". Sometime bassist with Rockin Robert and many others, and sometime painter and decorator, and able replacement for Bryan Cox after his move to France.
